Jean Dubuffet, Sourire, 1961
ENGLISH
Sourire, a suite of lithographs, features a central bust-sized figure with a textured, timeworn appearance. These lithographs are color proofs with final piece compiling all the colors into a single and final image. Jean Dubuffet (1901-1985) championed l’art brut (raw art), studying the innate creativity of children, amateurs, and the mentally ill. His works often conveyed a sense of experience and history through their rough, unpolished surfaces. Dubuffet’s approach celebrated the untrained, spontaneous aspects of art, challenging traditional aesthetics. His influence endures, promoting a broader, more inclusive understanding of artistic expression.
