The following material was collected several years ago by Kate Collins, who engaged in many conversations with Francisco Patencio, Chief of the Cahuillas. The bulk of the material collected a that time was published in the book, Stories and Legends of the Palm Springs Indians, in 1943. The material here published for the first time was not included in that volume. It remained in the Museum archives until it was uncovered by the Publications Committee. The Committee immediately realized its value and prepared the material for publication.
